Life constantly imparts valuable lessons to every man. She instructs you every moment of your existence here on earth. But you are so heedless that you forget the lesson at once. But without disgust She, Mother Prakriti again and again gives fresh lessons in the form of life’s experience. She is a tireless teacher and if only you will carefully retain the memory of the early experiences, then you will never commit a mistake or stray away from the correct path. If you treasure these lessons and cherish the memory of the past experiences, then you become wise and remain safe in your wisdom and in your greatness.
Dara was a humble shepherd in the land of Persia. He was of low birth and extremely poor but endowed with deep wisdom and possessed a shrewd insight and great understanding in the nature of men and things. The Shah of Persia coming to know of Dara’s wisdom and insight took him into his services where Dara soon rose to the highest position of the Shah’s Chief Councillor and trusted Prime Minister. This made the other nobles very jealous of Dara and they eagerly awaited a proper opportunity of bringing disgrace upon Dara and pulling him down from the high status he occupied.
The Shah had unlimited confidence in Dara and once he sent Dara as Governor-designate of one of the most important provinces of his great kingdom. In his absence, the hostile and jealous nobles reported many unfavourable things about Dara to the Shah. They accused Dara of corruption and told the Shah that Dara had amassed great riches by misappropriating Royal revenues and always took this ill-gotten treasure with him closely secured in a chest. Wherever he went, this chest followed him on camel’s back and he opened it only at night within the privacy of his own tent. He never once parted with the chest nor ever opened it in public. This was the grave charge.
The noble Shah trusted Dara implicitly; but the nobles insisted upon Dara being examined and exposed. At last, the Shah one day paid a sudden surprise visit to Dara and entering Dara’s tent at night said, “O Dara, my faithful friend, pray, show to me the contents of that chest. I have a great curiosity to see inside”. Though he was reluctant, yet Dara obeyed the royal command and before all slowly unlocked the chest, raised the lid and opened it full. And lo! to the astonished gaze of the onlookers was revealed an old shepherd’s cloak of plain simple cloth, brown with dust and tattered with age. Except this, there was naught else inside the chest — no gem, nor gold, nor silver or brass not even a single copper. The mystified Shah directed inquiring eyes at the silent Dara and the latter spoke and said, “Royal Shah, thou knowest now what I guarded closely all these years. This shepherd’s garment I wore in those days before you found and favoured me with thy royal kindness. But position, prestige and power are dangerous things for the unwary man. They raise one high and pull him down to the dust as well. Prosperity and plenty, authority and respect turn a man’s head and take him away from the straight path. He is safe who constantly remembers who he was before his fortune smiled upon him and God graced him. This alone reminds him what he really is and keeps him humble, true and righteous. Therefore, I have retained this old cloak of mine to remind me of my former life. I look at it every night lest I forget it in the intoxication of my present position and glory. This makes me ever humble, true and simple. O Royal Master, though outwardly Dara is thy chief councillor and a great Governor by thy favour, yet even to this day in reality he is the same simple shepherd humble, poor and incorruptible. And his one constant prayer to the Lord, his divine master is that he may continue to be so.”
Aspirants and seekers, take this great lesson from the sagely Dara. Never forget what you really are in your heart of hearts. Let not external changes and vicissitudes of fickle fortune turn your head and make you plunge into delusion and unrighteousness. Cherish the lessons of life carefully even as Dara treasured his humble cloak. Remember life’s lesson every day and thus remain unaffected by external passing phenomena. Even as Dara constantly remembered his shepherd origin, ever bear in mind your own true Atmic origin. Do not be overcome by the influence of impermanent secular Abhimana.

President Murmu’s Budget Session Address:
On Friday, President Droupadi Murmu delivered her address to Parliament, marking the beginning of the Budget session. She outlined the government's commitment to modernising the agricultural sector, promoting self-reliance, and increasing farmers' income. The address highlighted key policies aimed at strengthening India's agrarian economy and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
President Murmu said that the country has only one aim which is to become a Vikshit Bharat (developed India) and the government is working with a "saturation approach" so nobody is left in the journey.
Murmu said, "My government is working with the Saturation Approach, so nobody is left in the journey of Vikshit Bharat... We have only one aim to become Viksit Bharat."
As the Made in India defence product goes global, the President lauded the government for taking steps towards self-reliance in the defence sector.

After the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla link railway project, President Murmu said that now India will be connected by railway line from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
"The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project has been completed and now the country will be connected by railway line from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. India's metro rail network has now crossed the 1000-kilometre milestone. India has the world's third-largest metro network," the President stated.
The Congress and BJP have long been at odds, and this latest controversy adds to the ongoing political tensions. The Congress has yet to issue an official clarification regarding Sonia Gandhi’s remark. The President's House called the remark 'farther from the truth,' adding, "The President was not tired at any point. Indeed, she has always believed that speaking up for marginalized communities, women, and farmers, as she was doing during the course of her address, can never be tiring."
“The President’s office believes it might be the case that these leaders have not acquainted themselves with the idiom and discourse in Indian languages such as Hindi, and thus formed a wrong impression. In any case, such comments are in poor taste, unfortunate, and entirely avoidable,” the statement read.

The Budget Session on Friday began with a controversy after Sonia Gandhi called President Droupadi Murmu "a poor thing." Reacting to President Murmu's address, Sonia Gandhi said that she looked exhausted. "The President was getting very tired by the end. She could hardly speak, poor thing," Sonia Gandhi said when asked for her comment outside Parliament.

11. Law: Let us respect the rule of law and uphold social justice. In this lies the guarantee of our welfare and orderly progress towards better India.
12. Ahimsa: Non-injury is our highest virtue (Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah). Compassion is a divine quality. Protection of animals is our sacred duty. This is India’s special teaching. Let us be compassionate towards all creatures. Thus, be a true Indian. Try to become an embodiment of kindness compassion and goodness in your everyday life.
13. Ecology: Man, and Nature is inseparable. Man, and his natural environment are inter-related and mutually interdependent. Everything in Nature contributes to our protection and nourishment. Let us, therefore, protect our natural environment. Helping in maintaining the ecological balance is our duty. It is indispensable for our safe living and highest welfare. Polluting of public places and polluting of air and water of the country is a national crime. We must make amends of our past lapses.
14. Unity: The more united the people of a country, the greater is their ability to withstand all obstacles and dangers. United we stand, divided we fall. This is particularly true about today’s India. Therefore, let us live in close harmony and loving goodwill with all our countrymen. Love of our country means love of our countrymen. This is the most invaluable service a Citizen of India, can offer to our Motherland.
15. Education: The process of education should incorporate within it the imparting of the basic knowledge of India’s great culture, its lofty ideals and noble values and principles of living. Our education has to be oriented for enriching and enhancing the quality of life of our youth and students.

Disincentives generated by successive governments in Kerala through imposing artificial barriers on the freedom of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs have resulted in the collapse of agriculture in the state.
The state of Kerala has witnessed a significant decline in agricultural production in the last few decades. In this context, Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) has conducted a study: A stagnant agriculture in Kerala: The role of the state that elucidates how excessive government intervention in the form of policies and protective practices, namely, those in land, irrigation, agricultural credit system, price and procurement has created distortions in the agricultural market. This, in turn, has resulted in hampering the growth of agriculture in the state.
Land reforms that killed entrepreneurship:
The Land Reforms Act implemented in 1970 set a ceiling on the absolute size of landholdings by landlords, aimed at redistributing the surplus land among landless labourers and poor peasants. The method of implementation of land reforms in the state, however, has resulted in the fragmentation of landholdings. At present, the percentage of marginal farmers with landholding size less than one hectare is the highest in Kerala among the Indian states, while the agricultural growth here was among the least in India in 2012, according to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
The imposition of a ceiling on the size of landholdings has resulted in the elimination of scope for entrepreneurship in agriculture. Land was seized from entrepreneurs, who helped in improving the production of food and non-food crops in Kerala through innovative technologies. These lands were distributed among cooperative societies, which were predominantly under political parties. This resulted in large scale corruption in farming practices, leading to a rise in the cost of operation and high cumulative losses, as well as production based on non-scientific methods by marginal farmers.
Cooperative Farming or Coercive Farming?
The Land Utilisation Order, 1967, and the Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act, 2008, in the name of incentivising paddy farming, pressurised the farmers to carry on food crop cultivation. This was irrespective of the farming conditions and the low profitability of paddy cultivation, putting artificial constraints on the freedom of farmers.
Studies based on personal interviews with farmers indicate that there were incidents of widespread crop destruction led by powerful agricultural labour unions targeted at small and marginal farmers, while powerful farmers, who were using paddy lands for construction purposes, were left alone.
However, even after, and partly due to, such practices, area under paddy cultivation and production of rice declined significantly. At the same time, these practices created disincentives to farmers for overall cultivation, resulting in the shortage of agricultural labour. A commensurate mechanisation improvement did not take place due to different policy regulations like the Kerala Coconut Husks Control Order, 1973, and protests by trade unions against farm mechanisation, indirectly supported by the successive state governments.
Mismanaged Irrigation:
Kerala had a centralised management for the irrigation system, which was exclusive of farmers. This government-managed irrigation system was criticised for mismanagement, rent seeking and nepotism by irrigation officials and politicians. In 1985, Command Area Development Authorities (CADAs) were formed in the state to involve farmers in the management of irrigation systems. However, their aim was not achieved due to disregard of farmers’ initiatives with government orders dominating their organisations, farmers losing faith in the officials who promised regular supply of water, constant interference of politicians and the limited role of farmer organisations.
Most of the irrigation projects under CADAs were designed for the irrigation of wetland crops, mainly rice, neglecting the specific irrigation requirements of other crops. All these have resulted in very low irrigation efficiency in the state, thus hampering its agricultural growth.
No credits to agricultural credit either:
The agricultural credit market in the state has been affected by excessive government intervention, which has resulted in creating distortions in the agricultural credit system inhibiting productive capital formation in the sector. Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), aimed at providing an economical source of short- and medium-term agricultural credit to farmers in Kerala, were affected by bureaucracy and excessive government reliance. Along with these, high nonperforming assets, capital inadequacy and opposition to automation in PACS resulted in poor service of credit delivery to farmers.
According to the latest statistics, only 10.55 per cent of the total disbursement of Rs 71,301.88 crore by PACS were utilised for agriculture and only 0.21 per cent of this agricultural credit was for long-term agricultural purposes. District Cooperative Banks also gave priority to short-term credit over medium-term agricultural credit like PACS. These resulted in an increase in the share of production credit in the total agricultural credit and a significant decline in the share of investment credit, which is the main driver of private capital formation in agriculture.
The model of a centralist-planned economy was followed in Kerala with agricultural products to be sold to the government at government-determined Minimum Support Prices (MSP), and not based on market demand and supply conditions. This created price distortions in the market.
Kerala is reported to be the state with a steep rise in the government procurement of rice, of around 48 per cent in the last few years, while there has been a significant decline in the production of rice with a negative growth rate in this period, with lower availability of rice in the open market. Excessive government intervention in the marketing mechanisms in agriculture, namely, restricting marketing through cooperative societies, created artificial constraints on farmers, thus disincentivising them and ultimately leading to the collapse of agriculture in the state.
The collapse of agriculture:
The study thus shows that disincentives generated by the successive governments in Kerala through imposing artificial barriers on the freedom of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs have resulted in the collapse of agriculture in the state. The interests of farmers and market conditions were not considered while framing the policies and practices.
