Please accept it.” When they were about to commence their meal a Chandala or untouchable approached them and said, “I have lived my life by hunting, but now due to starvation, I have become so weak that my eyes are blurred and my head is reeling, and I am not able to see my target nor do I have the strength to pull my bow. Please give me something to eat.” The couple further divided the food which the wife wanted to share with her husband and she said, “Let us give this to this man and let the children eat. We can somehow bear our hunger.” And so
they gave the food away to him. The Chandala with tears of gratitude took it and went away. Then just as the children were about to eat, a hungry dog appeared before them looking
emaciated and eagerly eyed the food.

The husband looked at his wife; the wife looked at the husband and said, “Look! The dog is also the child of some mother even as our children are from us.” They approached the children and asked them to share their food with the dog. The children could not understand why their mother was asking them thus when they were hungry and about to eat. But they unquestioningly obeyed. They gave a little portion to the hungry dog and were happy to see the dog gobbling up the food. It comes to pass that the last piece of food left in the hands of the children was taken by a crow. Ultimately they end up sacrificing everything to appease the hunger of others. Great is the glory of this act because there is no agony worse than hunger for any living creature. It is said that the Gods themselves appeared and blessed them.

4. Use and Abuse of the Caste System -1.

The Hindus have survived many a foreign conquest on account of their caste system. But they have developed class jealousies and hatred in the name of the caste system. They have not got the spirit of co-operation. That is the reason why they are weak and disunited today. They have become sectarians in the name of the caste system. Hence there is degradation in India.

The caste system is, indeed, a splendid thing. It is quite flawless. But the defect came in from somewhere else. The classes gradually neglected their duties. The test of ability and character slowly vanished. Birth became the chief consideration in determining castes. All castes fell from their ideals and forgot all about their duties.

Brahmanas became selfish and claimed superiority over others by mere birth, with…

CHAPTER - 4. HINDU ETHICS-5.

5. Ethical Codes In Hinduism :

5.1
Hindu ethics is superb. Hinduism lays great emphasis on ethical discipline.

Yama (self-restraint) and Niyama (religious observances or canons) are the foundations of Yoga and Vedanta.

5.2
Undeveloped persons cannot think for themselves.

Hence rules of conduct have been laid down by great sages or seers like Manu and Sage Yajnavalkya.

5.3
Lord Krishna says in the Gita: “Let the scriptures be thy authority in determining what ought to be done or what ought not to be done.

Knowing what hath been declared by the ordinances of the scriptures, thou oughtest to work in this world” (Ch. XVI-24).

The Smritis written by Yajnavalkya, Manu and other sages distinctly prescribe the rules of conduct.

As you have not got the power nor the time to think of the moral principles and rules given in the scriptures, you can get them from the sages and saints and follow them to the very letter.

4. Use and Abuse of the Caste System -3.

At the present moment, the Varnasrama system exists in name only.

It has to be rebuilt properly.

Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras, who have fallen from their ideals and who are not doing their respective duties, must do their respective duties properly.

They must be educated on right lines.

They must raise themselves to their original lofty level.

The sectarian spirit must die.

They should develop a new understanding heart of love and devotion, with a spirit of co-operation, sacrifice and service.
